Art of Living 2020

Neale Whitaker often retreats to his stunning estate on the south coast of New South Wales, where the temperate Australian climate allows for the ease of indoor and outdoor living. Here, the King brand ambassador and renown style expert shares an insight into his beautiful property, how he defines comfort and his views on why the art of living encapsulates a spirit that is uniquely Australian.

To me, comfort is a balance between functionality, aesthetics and luxury. It’s the satisfaction that comes from experiencing well-designed furniture in the perfect location - whether it’s a sofa, chair, bed or desk. Comfort is hard to define but you definitely know it when you feel it! True comfort soothes the mind as much as it does the body.

At our property on the NSW south coast, we have the benefit of magnificent rural views from every aspect. It’s as if the outdoors and indoors are one. But in practical terms, the front of the house (a traditional single-storey cottage) opens via French doors to a shaded, wraparound verandah.

The rear deck and garden can be accessed via the master bedroom and back door. We have also created an outdoor room on the rear deck, protected by automated horizontal blinds, that function as a transition between house and garden.

The new King Outdoor collection delivers the same quality, innovation and design integrity that have become hallmarks of the iconic indoor collection. As outdoor rooms continue to extend our living spaces and embrace the Australian climate and lifestyle, sophisticated and weather-resistant outdoor designs allow for comfort, luxury and self-expression. Australians have always enjoyed a relationship with the outdoors. We’re blessed with a climate that allows us to enjoy an indoor/outdoor flow in our homes for most of the year. We’re also good at making the most of our downtime. The art of living encapsulates a spirit that is uniquely Australian - relaxed and informal but committed to quality and - increasingly – principles of quality and sustainability. And with so many of us spending more time at home in our current changed world, these values have never been so relevant or important.
